After spending over 12 years as a self-employed house cleaner in Florida, Barbara knew it was time for a change when she relocated to Syracuse. Despite building a successful cleaning business, she recognized that advancing her career would require developing new skills, particularly in technology, an area that felt both necessary and intimidating.
“I recently moved here from Florida where I was self-employed as a House Cleaner for over 12 years. I knew if I wanted to progress in my life and career, I needed to get the necessary skills to help me do that.”
Starting from the Very Beginning
Walking into the ATTAIN Lab, she wasn’t looking for advanced certifications or specialized training—she needed the fundamentals.
“I was able to start with the very basics of understanding how computers operate, work on my keyboarding skills and do my resume. Learning computer ‘tricks’ and shortcuts along the way.”
The Power of Exceptional Instruction
Barbara showed persistence and dedication to her training. After receiving certificates in Computer Basics, Introduction to Word, and typing, she had the confidence and updated skills to start applying for jobs.
“ATTAIN has an amazing, positive and supportive instructor. She gave me the confidence to try something new and scary, while giving me the tools to succeed. The flexible schedule allowed me to come here on my days off from work.”
Barbara empathized that the support extended far beyond software tutorials to include crucial career readiness components that many adult learners need but struggle to find.
“They provided support and help during and after the program. Cody was essential in helping me build my resume, interviewing skills and being a true support system. She was always very gracious with her time and support.”
Building Confidence for Lifelong Learning
Perhaps the most profound impact of the ATTAIN Lab experience wasn’t just the technical skills gained, but the fundamental shift in mindset about her own capabilities.
“They gave me the confidence and skills to believe it was possible at any phase of your life to learn something new.”
“I am starting a new job as an Information Aide for the Onondaga County Probation Office in September. It’s empowered me to believe in myself.”
