Eric Hack
Eric Hack rebuilt his career after the disruptions of COVID-19, securing a stable state position at SUNY Upstate University Hospital.

THE CHALLENGE: STARTING OVER AFTER COVID-19

For nearly three decades, Eric built a strong work ethic across a variety of trades, but his most meaningful experience was at St. Joseph’s Hospital. He found a true sense of purpose in that role and always hoped to return to the healthcare field. When the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted that path, it felt as though that opportunity had been lost.

When Eric first entered the ATTAIN Lab, he had no prior computer skills and was unfamiliar with how to search for jobs or complete online applications. Although he was highly motivated to succeed, he lacked the tools and digital knowledge needed to take the next step forward.

THE SUPPORT: STAFF THAT NEVER GAVE UP

From day one, ATTAIN Lab staff worked closely with him one-on-one, as often as needed, guiding him through the fundamentals of computer use and email from the ground up. They moved at his pace—never rushing ahead—ensuring he fully understood each step before moving forward. Staff also developed hands-on practice activities based on real job scenarios, so every email he wrote and every task he completed directly built skills for the workplace.

As he progressed, staff supported him through interview preparation, helping him build confidence and present himself effectively. That support remained consistent throughout his journey—whenever he had a question or encountered a challenge, staff were readily available to assist, without the need for a scheduled appointment.

“The staff was spectacular — helping me and others who were here for the same reason. No matter how busy it was, they always found time to help everyone.”

What stood out wasn’t just the instruction, it was the consistency. No matter how crowded the lab became, no matter how many students needed help at once, the staff was always present, always patient, always ready.

“I could never have gotten this job without them. They didn’t just teach me, they believed in me when I wasn’t sure I believed in myself.”

They also made sure he could keep learning outside the lab. Staff set up his laptop with the programs and resources he needed, showed him how to navigate it confidently at home, and gave him structured work to complete between sessions.

“They set up my laptop and gave me things to work on at home. I practiced every night. That’s what made the difference — I wasn’t just learning here, I was learning everywhere.”

THE RESULT: A STATE JOB HE CAN RETIRE FROM

Armed with new skills and real confidence, he began applying—and this time, he knew how. He navigated job boards, completed online applications, and presented himself professionally. The results exceeded his expectations.

Today, he is proudly employed with SUNY Upstate University Hospital’s Environmental Services — a New York State position with full benefits, job security, and a path to retirement. He’s back in the hospital environment he always loved, this time with everything he needs to stay.

“I never forgot St. Joseph’s and how lucky I was there. I can’t believe I got another chance to get back into a hospital — and this time, it’s a job I can retire from.”
